Description
There are pieces that quietly occupy a room and then there are those that seem to illuminate like these striking 1950s nightstands by Karpen of California. Architectural silhouettes and deeply recessed façades embody the confident modernism that defined California design in the postwar years - clean geometry softened by warmth, craftsmanship, and a distinctly optimistic spirit. The focal point of each cabinet is undoubtedly the extraordinary original brass hardware. Unlike conventional pulls, these sculptural circular escutcheons feature an engraved decorative motif surrounding a rotating brass tab. The hardware reads both modern and ancient creating a compelling contrast against the saturated lacquer finish. Recently refinished in Benjamin Moore’s Sundried Tomato, the lacquered surfaces possess a remarkable depth. Earthy, sophisticated, and unexpectedly contemporary. Elevated on petite tapered feet, the cabinets appear to float lightly despite their substantial forms. A distinctive and highly decorative pair whose uncommon hardware and luminous lacquer finish make them as much jewelry for the room as furniture. Equally suited as nightstands, end tables, or flanking cabinets in a living room or dressing area, this pair exemplifies the enduring appeal of California modernism: bold yet refined, sculptural yet highly functional.
