Description
A majestic and architecturally balanced Louis XIV period sideboard from the Lombardy-Piedmont region of Northern Italy, dating to the 17th century. Crafted in solid walnut with a powerful presence and classical proportions, this rare piece reflects the transitional elegance of early Baroque Italy, where regional cabinetmakers embraced both formality and function.
The façade is divided into two large paneled doors beneath a pair of short drawers, each adorned with geometric lozenge-shaped carvings framed by linear moldings. The drawers feature original ring pulls and are set into a frieze with a continuous diamond motif, a nod to Renaissance ornamentation transitioning into the boldness of the Louis XIV style.
The cabinet opens to reveal ample storage with internal shelving, supported by a robust pine interior. The sides are panelled and the whole rests on slightly compressed bun feet, lending it both stability and sculptural elegance. The top retains its original surface, rich with patina and the natural wear of centuries of use, an authentic, tactile reminder of its history.
The walnut wood has aged beautifully, with deep golden-brown tones and expressive grain, enhanced by time and minimal restoration. Every element, from the carved profiles to the symmetrical layout, speaks to the masterful restraint and enduring beauty of Northern Italian design during the Louis XIV era.
A remarkable piece suited for use in a dining room, entryway, or as a stately anchor in a more contemporary interior.
This is an antique and having been around for a long time, it will show signs of wear. Antique pieces have very much sought-after character and associated flaws. Please review photos for condition & contact us with questions! -
