Description
Louis XVI chest of drawers with marquetry, 19th century
French neoclassical chest of drawers from the late 18th century, from the time of Louis XVI.
Its sturdy oak structure is hand-assembled by contemporary cabinetmakers. The chest of drawers is veneered in rosewood with marquetry of rosewood, ebony and lemongrass.
The chest of drawers features an elegant Saint Anne grey marble top.
The front features three large drawers with the central part protruding, simulating three vertical registers of smaller drawers. Each drawer is decorated with three marquetry rectangles to further emphasize this sensation of false drawers. It also retains the medallion-shaped handles and the original keyholes, in gilded bronze.
The corners of the chest of drawers are rounded, simulating classical columns with gilded bronze applications and grooved carvings, ending in small truncated cone legs that end in a small golden heel.
The chest of drawers has been recently restored with the traditional varnish of the period, shellac.
The veining of the marble, the beautiful contrast between the different exotic woods of its marquetry and its functionality as storage furniture made this type of furniture the most desired by the French elite since the 18th century.
