Brazilian Modern Credenza in Rosewood & Pau Marfim, Att to Martin Eisler, 1950s

$ 34,000
  • Description
    An exceptional Brazilian modern credenza attributed to Martin Eisler, manufactured in Brazil during the 1950s. Monumental in scale yet remarkably restrained in its architecture, the piece brings together richly figured Brazilian rosewood and contrasting pau marfim (Brazilian ivorywood) in a sophisticated study of material, proportion, and craftsmanship.

    The long, low case is framed in dramatically grained rosewood, its deep reddish-brown tones beautifully matured through decades of natural aging. Against this darker structure, the warm golden hue of the pau marfim drawer fronts and doors creates a striking tonal contrast. The patina of both woods is particularly compelling, revealing the depth, variation, and character that only develop with time.

    The façade is organized with four generously proportioned drawers to the left and three large cabinet doors, creating a disciplined horizontal composition while providing substantial storage. Behind the doors, expansive interior compartments and shelving extend across the unusually wide case, making the credenza as functional as it is sculptural.

    Particular attention was given to the finishing of the doors and cabinetry. Their clean edges sit precisely within the rosewood framework, while the interior construction reveals the quality of the joinery throughout. The drawers are especially noteworthy, with finely executed dovetail construction underscoring the cabinetmaker's attention to detail and the high level of Brazilian furniture production during the period.

    The substantial rectangular volume is elevated on beautifully shaped rosewood legs, giving the nearly eight-foot-long cabinet an unexpected visual lightness. Their sculptural geometry creates a subtle architectural transition between the body of the credenza and the floor, emphasizing its impressive length without allowing the piece to feel heavy.

    A surviving Brazilian tax stamp on the reverse further speaks to the credenza's period manufacture and provenance.

    With its extraordinary scale, contrasting native Brazilian woods, refined construction, abundant storage, and beautifully preserved surface, this credenza embodies the material richness and sophisticated modernism associated with Brazil's most important postwar interiors.
