Description
An exceptional example of Brazilian Mid-Century Modern design, this rare Marquesa chest of drawers was designed by renowned Brazilian master Sergio Rodrigues and produced by Oca in Brazil during the 1960s. Widely regarded as one of Rodrigues’ most sophisticated case pieces, the Marquesa line embodies his distinctive ability to merge sculptural form, refined craftsmanship, and luxurious materials into timeless functional design.
Executed in richly figured Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), the cabinet showcases dramatic grain movement across its eight drawers, creating a striking visual rhythm that highlights the natural beauty of the timber. The warm tones and organic patterns are complemented by Rodrigues’ signature recessed circular pulls, a sculptural detail that lends depth and character while maintaining the piece’s clean architectural presence.
A finely veined marble top provides an elegant contrast to the richly textured rosewood, elevating the composition while offering a durable and practical surface. The cabinet is raised on slender solid rosewood legs, giving the substantial form a light and balanced appearance.
Beyond its visual appeal, the piece offers generous storage through eight spacious drawers, making it equally suited for use as a bedroom dresser, statement credenza, or sophisticated storage cabinet within a living space. The combination of rare materials, masterful joinery, and iconic design places this example among the most desirable storage pieces produced during the golden age of Brazilian modernism.
A highly collectible work by one of the most important figures in twentieth-century Latin American design, this Marquesa chest represents an increasingly scarce opportunity to acquire an authentic Sergio Rodrigues masterpiece. -
