Description
This extraordinary bar cabinet, designed by Paolo Buffa and produced in Italy during the 1950s, is a superb example of the refined elegance and exceptional cabinetmaking that distinguish Buffa's most sophisticated creations. Architectural proportions, precious materials and exquisite decorative details combine to create a truly remarkable piece of Italian Mid-Century design.
The cabinet is crafted in finely selected teak veneer, arranged in an elegant herringbone pattern across the entire façade and sides. The rich golden-brown tones and carefully book-matched grain emphasize the remarkable quality of the wood while giving the cabinet a refined sense of movement and depth.
The front is dominated by two large doors, each decorated with three recessed panels featuring exquisite figural marquetry depicting elegant classical fencing scenes. Executed in contrasting woods and framed by delicate brass surrounds, these decorative panels showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship and artistic refinement that characterize Paolo Buffa's finest furniture.
The cabinet stands on elegantly tapered legs, enriched with engraved solid brass collars and sabots, giving the piece remarkable visual lightness while reinforcing its architectural proportions. The subtle brass detailing is repeated throughout the cabinet, contributing to its understated sense of luxury.
Opening the doors reveals an exceptionally refined interior crafted entirely in light maple, creating a striking contrast with the warmth of the teak exterior. The interior is fully mirrored, amplifying both light and space, while glass shelves provide elegant display areas for bottles and glassware. Four finely constructed maple drawers offer additional storage for bar accessories, reflecting the same uncompromising level of craftsmanship found throughout the cabinet.
The combination of luxurious materials, elegant proportions and masterfully executed marquetry transforms this cabinet into far more than a functional bar. It is an exceptional collector's piece that perfectly embodies the sophistication and artistic excellence of Italian design during the 1950s, and one of the most refined expressions of Paolo Buffa's unmistakable style.
