Description
Designed by Paolo Buffa and produced in Italy around 1955, this elegant four-door sideboard perfectly illustrates the designer's ability to combine architectural restraint with refined decorative craftsmanship. Its long, balanced proportions and carefully studied details create a cabinet that is both visually light and highly functional, reflecting the sophistication of Italian furniture production during the post-war years.
The cabinet is veneered in finely figured teak, arranged in a meticulously matched herringbone pattern that extends seamlessly across all four doors. Rather than serving as simple decoration, the veneer becomes an integral part of the design, creating subtle variations of light and texture that enhance the cabinet's horizontal composition.
A continuous band of finely executed floral marquetry decorates the center of the façade. Delicately composed using contrasting wood species, the inlay depicts intertwined leaves, flowers and scrolling foliage inspired by classical ornament. Instead of dominating the design, the marquetry introduces a refined decorative accent that reflects Paolo Buffa's characteristic dialogue between traditional Italian craftsmanship and modern design.
The cabinet stands on elegant tapered legs enriched with solid brass collars and sabots, details that visually lighten the structure while providing a discreet contrast to the warmth of the teak. Small brass knobs complete the façade with remarkable restraint, allowing the quality of the veneers and marquetry to remain the true focal points.
Opening the outer doors reveals two spacious storage compartments fitted with adjustable shelves, while the central section conceals four drawers beneath an additional shelf, providing practical storage for tableware, linens or smaller accessories. The entire interior is finished in maple, whose pale tone creates a striking contrast with the darker exterior while enhancing the brightness and functionality of the cabinet.
The careful attention devoted to the interior reflects the same high standards evident on the exterior. The precision of the cabinetry, the seamless veneer matching and the balanced proportions demonstrate the exceptional quality of Italian cabinetmaking during the 1950s. Every element, from the concealed storage layout to the finely executed marquetry, contributes to a piece conceived with equal emphasis on beauty and practicality.
The sideboard is presented in good original condition, preserving the warmth of the teak, the crisp definition of the marquetry and the natural contrast of the maple interior while being fully ready for everyday use.
