Description
This two-door wardrobe stands with a quiet authority that owes much to its well-judged proportions and the dialogue between its materials. The rectangular volume, neither imposing nor recessive, is lifted from the ground on four splayed, tapered legs tipped with brass sabots — a detail that introduces a sense of lightness and forward motion to what is otherwise a deliberately restrained form. The silhouette is clean, slightly trapezoidal from the side, and reads as a resolved statement of Italian mid-century domesticity at its most considered.
The structure is in dark-toned hardwood, its grain visible along the sides and framing edges. The two doors are entirely clad in parchment, applied in broad panels that display the material's characteristic tonal variations — warm ivory shifting into amber and pale ochre — each piece unique in its natural patterning. A pair of elongated, elliptical brass handles, sculptural in their simplicity, are mounted centrally, accompanied by a small brass escutcheon with key. The interior, lined in a lighter wood, is thoughtfully arranged: a full-length mirrored panel is set into the inside of one door, while the compartment divides into a generous hanging section on the left and, on the right, a vertical stack of shallow drawers fitted with glass fronts, above which sit open shelves and small hooks for ties. The glass-fronted drawers are a detail of particular refinement, allowing the contents to be seen at a glance while remaining neatly enclosed.
The wardrobe belongs to a tradition of Italian bourgeois production of the 1950s in which parchment — a material demanding careful preparation and skilled application — served as a marker of quality and cultivated taste. The use of parchment on case furniture of this period is well documented across Milanese and northern Italian workshops, where it was favoured for its luminosity and tactile warmth. The present example is consistent with that milieu in both its material choices and its understated elegance.
The wardrobe is in very good condition, having been professionally restored and refinished by our internal atelier. The parchment surfaces are well preserved, with natural patina and tonal variation consistent with age. The brass hardware retains its original finish. All drawers, doors and internal fittings function correctly.
