Description
a rare and fine 18th Century example of Bermudian British Colonial furniture characteristic of 17th-century European craftsmanship featuring five long drawers with raised geometric paneled fronts and teardrop pulls all raised on sturdy block feet
Made in the style of English Jacobean furniture. Bermudian craftsmen made a variety of furniture out of imported Mahogany and local Bermuda cedar also called Bermuda juniper. These pieces were largely made for British colonies in the Caribbean throughout the 18th century. The grain of this wood is both beautiful and unique, featuring the impressive lines of a Jacobean chest but lighter in color and feel. Local cabinetmakers heavily relied on native cedar because it resisted humidity, salt air, mildew, and insects while aging to a warm honey-red hue. -
