Description
RENAISSANCE REVIVAL BURL WALNUT, MARBLE AND PATINATED BRONZE CREDENZA CABINET
With a substantial bas-relief bronze plaque of a Family of Satyrs in the manner of Clodion | ca. last quarter of the 19th century
Item # 308ZRG17S
A rather rare and unusual example from the Renaissance Revival period of the last quarter of the 19th century, the cabinet presents with a bold profile, great color and texture. It is a distinct statement piece in the interior. A conforming marble top is inset into the carved foliate rim of the top and the entire cabinet is decorated with a mixture of solid walnut and walnut burl veneers with ebonized incised lines lending a stark angularity to the form. A single full-width hand-dovetailed drawer is situated in the top over a blind-door in the lower that opens to reveal a shelved interior. Most attractively and interesting, the front of the door features a raised bas-relief sand-cast and patinated bronze plaque depicting a vivid landscape of a Satyr playing a tune on his woodwind to his family before a large tree, the Satyress plays with the children. Executed in the manner of Claude Michel, known as Clodion, it is a very fine cast with intricate detailing, chiseling and contrast in the translucent glowing patination. Substantial and incredibly useful, this is a piece that was made with great care and designed to survive for centuries if well-cared for.
Measurements: 39 3/8" H x 20 7/8" D x 48" W
Condition Report:
Carefully cleaned and polished, the bronze plaque sealed in conservator-grade wax. Marble top with a professionally executed repair and fill. Four veneer patches at the front feet corners. Interior shelves refinished. No key, locks untested. A very fine presentation, ready to place. -
