Lacquer is a technique that dates back to the Shang dynasty, circa 1600-1100 B.C. Lacquer is a laborious and time-consuming process. After it is tapped from the trees, lacquer needs to be boiled and strained to rid of impurities and prepare it as a coating. The lacquer technique is to apply in thin layers multiple times and each layer of lacquer applied has a curing period of 24 hours in between so that it can dry, meaning it could take up to a year for a large lacquer piece to be completed. After the lacquer dries, artisans then hand carve these intricate designs. Natural inclusions may show on the lacquer.
