Brazilian Modern Bookshelf in Rosewood, Sergio Rodrigues, c. 1968 – Lot 387

Designed circa 1968 by Sergio Rodrigues and produced by OCA, this large-scale bookshelf exemplifies the designer’s architectural approach to furniture, where structure, proportion, and material are clearly expressed.
The shelving system is composed of two vertical side carcasses connected by three continuous horizontal beams, creating a disciplined, modular grid. Within this framework, the piece offers multiple open shelf compartments of varying widths, allowing for both books and larger objects, while maintaining a strong horizontal emphasis typical of Rodrigues’ work. A bank of four integrated drawers is positioned in the lower section, introducing functional storage without disrupting the overall rhythm of the composition.
Constructed entirely in Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), the bookshelf displays exceptional natural aging, with deep, saturated tones and pronounced grain variation developed over decades. The density and oil-rich nature of the wood have resulted in a smooth, matte patina that enhances the sculptural quality of the form. Exposed metal fasteners and visible joinery reinforce Rodrigues’ commitment to structural honesty and material integrity.
Fully finished on all sides, the bookshelf was conceived as a freestanding unit, suitable for placement at the center of a room or as a spatial divider, rather than as a wall-bound storage piece. Both functional and architectural, it represents Brazilian Modernism at its most confident and enduring.
