Description
A Swedish painted breakfront three-drawer commode from late 19th century Stockholm, with dentil molding, carved rosettes and tapered feet. This Swedish painted commode features a slightly raised rectangular top with canted corners in the front sitting above three graduated drawers, each marked in their centre with a breakfront movement. The upper drawer, the smallest one, is beautifully adorned with a dentil molding evoking the influence of the Gustavian period. The eye is then gently lead downwards towards the overhanging skirt. Several elements were ingeniously used to create a perfect visual harmony. The repetition of the dentil molding is one, while the fluting of the canted side posts, surmounting the angled, tapered fluted legs is another. The discreet addition of the carved rosettes on the top of the posts participates in the elegance of the piece. The commode is painted in a light color, typical of the Scandinavian taste for soft palettes aiming at brightening the Swedes' homes during the long, dark winters. With its interesting lines and refined décor, this Swedish Stockholm three-drawer commode, circa 1880 will bring a graceful presence to any home, whether placed in a bedroom, living room or foyer.
