Description
This is a quintessential example of the "Stile Littorio" in transition toward the more whimsical Italian Modernism movement. The craftsmanship and materials suggest a high-end design piece produced by Dassi with the inlaid portion attributed to Giò Ponti.
The focal point is the magnificent wood inlay on the front panels depicting a neoclassical scene with figures in tunics, a deer, and a rearing horse. The inlay is crafted using various wood veneers such as fruitwood, walnut, and maple which are cut and assembled like a puzzle to create a "painting" in wood.
The stylized and elongated figures are typical of the Italian aesthetic of the 1940s and 1950s which often drew inspiration from Roman and Greek mythology.
The glossy cream-colored body appears to be covered in parchment or goatskin. This technique was made famous by Aldo Tura although the architectural form of this cabinet more closely aligns with the style of Dassi or Giò Ponti.
The plum or violet mirrored interior is a classic "surprise" element of Italian bar cabinets. The glass shelves and specific bottle or glass holders seen as carved wooden supports are designed specifically for cocktail service.
The sculptural elongated drawer handles and the central lock plate are made of brass. -
