Description
This Southwestern pedestal side table is an example of regional American desert folk art, dating to the 1930s or 1940s. The table stands on an inverted tripod base crafted from a naturally hollowed, weathered cactus skeleton. While often referred to historically as Saguaro, this intricate, lace-like latticework is the distinctive skeleton of the Cholla cactus, utilized for its natural structural form. Nestled within the junction of the tripod branches is a vintage metal ball weight, adding a subtle industrial element to the organic design. The piece features a hybrid construction, crowned by a circular, heavily weathered industrial steel top with a raised rim and an integrated square steel baseplate that is screwed directly into the flat-cut top of the wooden column. The metal top is finished in an aged, textured gold enamel.
Dating to the mid-20th century, this piece reflects the period's regional design interest in combining native desert materials with utilitarian, industrial metal elements. Sourced in the early 1990s during historical research into Arizona's design movements, this table represents a cross-section of regional folk craft and rugged decorative style. The juxtaposition of the textured desert wood against the patinated metal top makes it a versatile accent piece suitable for rustic, Southwestern, or industrial modern interiors. It remains a collectible and well-preserved example of early Western craftsmanship.

Condition Report
Overall Condition: Good / Very Good – Wear consistent with age and use.
Structural Integrity: Stable and structurally sound. The organic Cholla wood trunk is well-preserved, intact, and firmly joined via its steel mounting plate to the top.
Finish & Patina: The interior basin of the heavy steel top displays an authentic, heavily oxidized weathered brown patina with superficial surface rust, adding significantly to its vintage character. The outer edge and underside of the rim retain their textured gold enamel finish, exhibiting minor rubbing, minor paint loss, and age-related weathering.
Modifications: None observed; the marriage of the heavy industrial steel pan top to the organic Cholla base is original to the piece's historical folk construction. -
