Description
19th century French Louis XV style ormolu mounted writing desk
French, Late 19th Century
Height 100cm, width 121cm, depth 66cm
Crafted in the late 19th century, this writing desk is filled with Louis XV style decorative features.
Of an elongated oval outline with a shaped bombe structure, the writing desk is filled with several storage compartments. The upper part of the pieces features four tapering drawers flanked by two larger ones. Each one is mounted with rocaille-shaped ormolu handles. The two ends of the piece are decorated with overhanging acanthus branch twin-light candelabra, adding a touch of elegance to the antique. All surfaces of the desk feature superb parquetry as well as stringing which frames details such as the drawers.
Below is an extendable writing section covered with tooled leather. The frieze is filled with a large central drawer and two smaller ones on the sides. All are lockable and are mounted with ornate ormolu escutcheons.
Four cabriole legs support this writing desk. Their tops are adorned with mounts cast in the shape of scrolls, shells, acanthus leaves, and bellflowers. Each one terminates with ormolu sabots.
Of a refined design, this antique writing desk is sure to bring a touch of 18th century elegance to one’s interior. -
