A Fine George II Mahogany Tripod Table
-
Description
A fine Chippendale period tripod tea table this table makes the transition to the more delicate style of the third quarter of the 18th century.
This mid 18th century table has a delicate single- piece cross-banded top that is in distinct contrast to the rather thick pie–crust table-tops of the same period.
The top sits on a four pillar birdcage action above a turned fluted column, ringed, with an interesting foliate and punched knop and a elegant modified egg and dart ring, all on a cabriole legs trapped by scrolls, with shell and bell-flower capped knees, c-scrolls to the undersides and terminating in very well defined claw and ball feet.
The quality of the caring to this piece is very fine, deep and well defined and the timbers are of the best quality, all indicating a rather prominent London make. Also, the elegant top indicates a transition to the styles of the second half of the century and sets a date of manufacture that could be as early as 1745.
A fine quality example. -
