Description
The Artona dining table, designed by Afra Scarpa and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto in the 1970s, stands as a refined and iconic example of Italian modern design from the period. Combining architectural rigor with exceptional craftsmanship, this piece embodies the understated luxury and material richness that define the Scarpa duo’s work.
The tabletop is executed in exquisite burl walnut, carefully selected for the depth, movement, and individuality of its grain. Each surface presents a unique, almost organic pattern, enhancing the table’s visual presence. Surrounding the top, a refined marquetry border introduces a subtle geometric rhythm, composed of contrasting woods including a dark-stained black wood that frames the composition with elegance and precision.
The base is conceived as two sculptural volumes with a strong architectural identity. These elements provide both structural integrity and a bold visual anchor, balancing the richness of the top. Partially upholstered in quilted leather, they introduce a tactile dimension that contrasts beautifully with the polished wood surfaces. Discreet brass accents further enrich the design, adding delicate points of light and reinforcing the table’s sophisticated character.
More than a functional dining piece, the Artona table is a statement of design culture, where craftsmanship, materiality, and form converge in a timeless composition.
