Description
Alexandre Chevrie, A Museum Quality French Ormolu Mounted Mahogany Royal Executive “Empire” Desk, circa 1875.
Double sided desk with six solid bronze lions paw feet, framed ormolu lions on both sized, jewel quality ormolu medusa heads concealing the drawer locks, and exquisite ormolu frieze designs throughout. With original red leather top.
Truly the best quality desk with the most sophisticated design for this Napoleon III period. There was a similar bedroom set in this style that was made for King Farouk of Egypt.
The lock-plate signed A. CHEVRIE Fabt. 7, rue de Braque Paris.
Chevrié was recorded from 1878 at 11 rue Portefoin, at 7 rue Braque in 1878 and finally at 7 rue de Belleyme at the turn of the last century. He participated in both the 1878 and 1889 Universal Exhibitions, being awarded bronze and silver medals, respectively. In 1894 he received the medal of the Légion d’Honneur.
Although the work of Chevrié is meticulously recorded in Ledoux-Lebard (pp. 126,127), his work is rarely seen on the market. On the basis of the present desk, one might agree that Chevrié could be ranked amongst the best Parisian ébénistes of his time.
29? high x 60? wide x 32? deep.
Very good condition throughout. No damages noted. Normal wear consistent with age and use.
A truly exceptional collectors piece. -
