Sculptural Root Side Table or Stool in Solid Elm. Europe, 1960s-70s.

A sculptural side table - or stool - carved from a single trunk of elm, combining a clean geometric upper block with the natural form of the tree’s root base. The lower section retains the organic contours of the root flare, which contrasts beautifully with the more structured silhouette above.

The piece shows a warm color and the solid elm wood features visible growth rings across the top. Natural cracks and subtle irregularities have been preserved, highlighting the expressive qualities of solid wood.

Most presumably a Dutch or Belgian 1960s to 1970s workshop piece from the time when furniture makers explored more organic approaches to their work, allowing the natural form of the tree to guide the final shape.

Both functional and sculptural, the piece works equally well as a side table, pedestal, or stand-alone object.
