Description
This rare trolley, model number 901, was originally designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto in 1936 and produced by Artek, the company he co-founded to advance modern Scandinavian design. The trolley’s structure is crafted from laminated bent birch, showcasing the softly curved profiles that are signature to Aalto’s functionalist style. The rectangular frame features gently rounded corners, creating a harmonious balance between geometric form and organic softness. The trolley’s top and lower shelves are finished in white lacquer, providing a clean and light contrast to the natural wood surfaces.
Distinctive oversized circular wheels, also finished in white lacquer and equipped with rubber edges, enhance both the mobility and the sculptural quality of the piece. A minimal handle is seamlessly integrated into the bent wood frame, maintaining the trolley’s streamlined and cohesive aesthetic. The overall design prioritizes simplicity, utility, and elegance, aligning with mid-century Scandinavian modern ideals.
The trolley is in good vintage condition, with wear consistent with its age, reflecting its history and authentic use. Its dimensions are 50 centimeters in width, 90 centimeters in depth, and 56 centimeters in height (approximately 19.7 by 35.4 by 22 inches), providing a balanced scale suitable for a variety of functional and decorative purposes.
This piece exemplifies Aalto’s innovative approach to design, particularly his pioneering use of bent wood and organic forms, and remains a notable example of functionalist furniture that combines practicality with sculptural beauty.
