Description
An Unusual Regency Mahogany Breakfront Side or Serving Table with Reeded and Ebony Detailing
English. First Quarter of the Nineteenth Century.
Measurements
Height: 37" (94 cm); Width: 90.5" (230 cm); Depth: 26.5" (67.3 cm)
Research:
Of mahogany with ebony detailing. The top of breakfront form has an owl beak molded edge and rests upon a frieze containing three paneled convex shaped drawers, divided by panels of horizontal ebony and mahogany reeding. The whole raised on six serpentine shaped legs with carved reeded fronts.
This remarkable side table is an example of first quality English Regency furniture at its most inventive. The serpentine shaping of this table’s four front legs is unusual, as is their carved reeded detailing. The frieze, which contains three concealed drawers, has the uncommon feature of being of pronounced convex shaping. The whole table is distinguished by its use of high grade mahogany, which retains excellent color and patina.
