Antique French gilt bronze mounted mahogany side table

$ 12,000
  • Description
    The beautiful Neoclassical style designs of Jean-Henri Riesener (1735-1806), perhaps the most celebrated cabinetmaker of all time, are the inspiration for this wonderful antique side table. In particular, the ormolu mounts which adorn the piece - showing festoons, laurel garlands, and cherubs - take after the 18th Century master.

    The table is topped with veined red marble which sits above gilt bronze friezes on the front and sides of the table. The frieze at the front is mounted with a central scene showing two young fauns (a mythological half-man, half-goat creature) and a cherub, here representing the Greek god Bacchus, the god of wine, pleasure, and dancing. The front also opens as a drawer. The table is supported by four straight, tapering, fluted legs on gilt bronze toupie feet.
