Description
An antique sutra reading wood desk (Gyeongsang) from Korea circa mid-19th century. The two-tier short table was constructed in solid Korean Elm wood (Zelkova) and features a small drawer and a shelf space above. On both side supports, there were cutout motif of Buddhism symbol Swatika within a roundel. This form of small table is known as Gyeongsang and was traditionally associated with Buddhism temple in Goryeo dynasty and used by monks and nuns for sutra reading. In the Confucianism-dominated Joseon society, they made entrance into the common households as reading tables in the scholar's study. The low profile renders its user to sit on the floor. The small drawer is equipped with a brass lock with fine engraving to secure important letters and scholar items. The shelf above can hold a few manuscripts and books.
In very well-preserved and original condition, the table shows striking grains on the surface and exudes a sense of austere beauty.
Compared this table to a Gyeongsang with similar Buddhism symbols in the collection of Weisman Art Museum Object number 1989.7.76 -
