Description
Signed: "Made by N. Nauta. Wichita, Ka. U.S.A. 1931"
(underneath top)
This superbly designed and executed example of marquetry furniture depicts a mixture of classical scenes along with Art Deco overtones. The table is decorated with scenes and iconography along all surfaces showing off the expertise of this cabinet maker. This 'Tour de Force" of skill and precision along with the quality of construction is equally matched with its' brillant design and images reflecting the style of the period.
Nicholas Nauta was born in Holland around 1872 and he immigrated to America in 1892. We know he worked as an apprentice and as a journeyman but no other pieces are known by him. He lived in Wichita from 1915 to the 1930's. He is listed in the Biographical Dictionary of Kansas Artists (active before 1945). - More Information
