Description
Arthur Espenet Carpenter Wrought Iron Coffee Table in Narra Wood 1960
Great length for those long sofas, or used behind sofa as display platform
Dimensions: 13¼″ H × 86″ W × 23″ D
Signed, numbered, and inscribed to underside: 219 Espenet NARRA
A striking coffee table by renowned California Studio Craft artisan Arthur Espenet Carpenter, featuring a sculptural hand-forged wrought iron spider base supporting a richly figured solid Narra wood top. Crafted circa 1965, this piece exemplifies Carpenter’s signature fusion of organic form and fine craftsmanship.
Narra, native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific, is a prized tropical hardwood known for its warm golden-yellow to deep reddish-brown tones, often with interlocked or wavy grain patterns and a natural, glowing luster. The heartwood frequently displays distinctive figure—curly, mottled, or ribbon-like—enhancing its ornamental value. Traditionally used in fine furniture, cabinetry, and decorative arts, Narra is also celebrated for its durability and dimensional stability.
A rare and exceptional example of mid-century American studio furniture.
