“Typenko” round side / coffee table

Iconic Modernist side/coffee table by Axel Einar Hjorth (1888-1959) for Nordiska Kompaniet, with round top and pedestal in birch stained a deep brown (dark enough for drama/ steel disk base, crafted by the NK workshop and having maker’s metal tag numbered “RS611061235.” This table features an unusual variation for this model, which was usually finished in a single piece of smooth grain veneer, rather than the quadrant pinwheel effect used here. The table was released with the “Typenko” collection of 1931, Hjorth’s decidedly glamorous reaction to Functionalism’s triumph at the Stockholm Exhibition during the previous year.
