Description
A stool and side table of quiet architectural authority, Neko is constructed from two hand-cut aluminum sheets that intersect at right angles, their brushed silver surfaces catching light with industrial restraint. Each sheet is shaped into a paired arch at its base, lending the structure a monumental, almost cathedral-like silhouette — legs that suggest columns, negative space that breathes. Two elliptical shelves, one at seat or tabletop height and one just below, extend from the intersection to define the horizontal plane of the piece.
At the center of the upper surface, a cylindrical raku-fired ceramic vase passes through a precisely cut aperture, its body suspended within the structure and its mouth flush with the tabletop. The vase carries the characteristic surface of the raku tradition: a pale, chalky ground laced with a web of dark crackle lines — the visible record of thermal shock, fire, and carbon. Its organic imperfection stands in deliberate counterpoint to the cool exactitude of the aluminum.
Neko exists at the threshold between furniture and sculpture. The metal is rational; the ceramic is alchemical. Together they compose an object that functions as a vessel for both use and contemplation. -
