Description
Rare early Eames Desk Unit (EDU) model D-20-N designed by Charles and Ray Eames and manufactured by Herman Miller between 1952-1955. This particularly handsome example features a beautifully figured walnut veneer work surface paired with understated monochromatic black and gray panels, polished metal framing and exposed structural details.
Developed alongside the celebrated Eames Storage Units (ESU), the desk grew out of Charles and Ray Eames' experiments with modular construction and standardized industrial components. The system was developed around 1950–1951 and remained in its original production run only until 1955. The Eameses used an intentionally exposed framework of steel uprights, cross supports, panels and plywood elements, allowing the construction itself to become an important part of the visual composition. The Eames Office has described the ESU and EDU as among the clearest expressions of the designers' belief in standardized, interchangeable components.
The concept evolved from work undertaken by Charles and Ray Eames for a 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts and reflects both the "machine aesthetic" and Japanese influences that were important to their work during this period. The exposed steel structure, thin planes and carefully balanced asymmetry created furniture that was distinctly industrial yet remarkably refined.
This example is especially desirable for its walnut top and restrained monochromatic palette. Period desks could be specified with walnut or birch wood elements and were offered with different panel and structural configurations. The walnut option was subsequently eliminated when the design was reintroduced decades later, making surviving original walnut examples particularly identifiable with the early production.
The desk incorporates a two-drawer pedestal with contrasting black and gray exterior panels, exposed metal edging and small metal pulls. The upper drawer retains its original removable molded organizer tray, while the generously proportioned lower drawer incorporates dividers suitable for files and documents. The opposite end of the desk is supported by a remarkably light architectural framework of slender metal uprights connected by a horizontal stretcher.
The warm grain and rich coloration of the walnut provide a striking contrast to the otherwise monochromatic industrial palette, giving this example a considerably more sophisticated appearance than the brightly colored versions more commonly associated with the series.
An exceptional surviving example from one of the most experimental periods of Charles and Ray Eames' work, combining the visual language of industrial production with the warmth and refinement of natural walnut.
The desk remains in very good original vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Two of the four original circular drawer pulls are absent; the original threaded mounting points remain intact. The two drawers, including the removable upper organizer tray and lower file dividers, remain intact and fully functional. -
