1950s Eduardo Alvarado Mexican Mosaic Banderillero Rosewood Table Castillo Taxco

$ 4,100
  • Description
    This mid-century Mexican modernist accent table features a hand-set stone mosaic tabletop created by artist Eduardo Alvarado during the 1950s or 1960s. While the broader postwar market focused heavily on silver jewelry and hollowware, Alvarado carved out a distinct niche as the master of high-art, polymaterial mosaics within the mid-century Mexican Modernist movement. Operating from a dedicated, independent studio space on the second floor of the prominent Los Castillo Plateros showroom in Taxco, Alvarado became the public artistic face of their large-scale division, famously executing the monumental, historic exterior architectural murals on the building's facade.

    Alvarado mastered Mosaico Azteca—the meticulous setting of crushed and hand-shaped native minerals into functional decorative art frameworks. For elite furnishings and custom architectural panels, his studio output moved fluidly between pre-Hispanic allegories and international modernism. His highly sophisticated workflow for custom commissions involved mailing tailored "sample bags" of raw minerals—such as turquoise, malachite, lapis lazuli, obsidian, and cream-colored coquille d'oeuf (eggshell lacquer)—directly to clients' homes to choose their palette, followed by 6 to 12 months of hand-setting documented through periodic progress photography.

    This brilliantly executed table translates that rigorous architectural capability into an intimate furniture format. The composition depicts a stylized, dynamic banderillero facing a charging black bull during the secondary stage of a bullfight—the tercio de banderillas. The vignette fuses traditional stone inlay with European avant-garde motifs drawing from Cubism and Picasso, setting the mineral figures against a dense field of creamy white quartz tesserae. The rectangular tabletop is bordered by a dark, patinated metal rim, set into a solid Mexican Rosewood (Palo Escrito) frame, and stands on tapered rosewood legs finished with polished brass sabots.
