Description
This rare side table or stool, designed by Eero Aarnio and produced by ASKO in Finland, exemplifies the Finnish designer’s forward-thinking approach to form, material, and multifunctionality. Known for his boundary-pushing use of materials and his iconic, sculptural silhouettes, Aarnio’s work in natural materials like rattan is less frequently seen than his celebrated plastic and fiberglass pieces, making this item a distinctive and valuable contribution to his oeuvre.
The piece is entirely constructed from natural rattan and shaped into a flowing, hourglass form. The contours are soft and continuous, reflecting Aarnio’s signature interest in organic geometry and tactile appeal. The hourglass silhouette is not only visually dynamic but also highly practical, allowing the piece to serve interchangeably as a low side table, a stool, or even a sculptural accent within an interior. The curvature of the frame provides stability while maintaining a light, open aesthetic, and the tight weave showcases the artisanal craftsmanship involved in its production.
The rattan used here is warm in tone, with subtle variations in hue that emphasize the natural origin of the material. The surface has been carefully preserved and shows only minor signs of age, suggesting respectful use and quality construction. Its texture, combined with the gentle sheen of the patinated finish, adds to the piece’s visual and tactile richness.
Eero Aarnio (b. 1932), best known for his revolutionary Ball Chair and Bubble Chair, consistently sought to break away from conventional furniture forms. While many of his most iconic works rely on synthetic materials and futuristic shapes, pieces like this one reflect a more grounded, nature-oriented side of his design philosophy. Even when using traditional materials such as rattan, Aarnio maintained his commitment to playful form and ergonomic function. The result is an object that is both sculptural and approachable—at once bold and welcoming.
ASKO, the Finnish manufacturer responsible for this piece, was instrumental in bringing innovative Nordic designs to a global audience in the mid-20th century. Their collaboration with Aarnio helped bridge handcrafted traditions and modernist experimentation, producing furniture that remains relevant and desirable decades later.
This particular example is in excellent vintage condition. The rattan frame is structurally sound, and the woven elements are intact with no unraveling or loss. Minor, age-appropriate wear enhances the authenticity of the piece without detracting from its overall appearance or function.
