Description
Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal Collection remains one of the most iconic achievements in modern furniture design. Often called the “Tulip,” Saarinen created the collection to eliminate the visual clutter of traditional table and chair legs that dominated the 1950s. His elegant solution was a single sculptural pedestal — a smooth, central stem that meets the floor with unprecedented grace. This revolutionary form quickly became a design classic and expanded into a family of chairs, accent tables, and, as featured here, dining tables.
The 96” Oval Dining Table exemplifies Saarinen’s mastery of proportion. Its generous surface comfortably accommodates eight, while the streamlined silhouette preserves a sense of lightness and timeless appeal. This particular piece is an early production model, dating from the late 1950s to early 1960s. A key indicator of its vintage is the base, crafted from heavy cast iron rather than the cast aluminum used by Knoll in later years and today. Both the base and the table’s underside have been meticulously restored and repainted in the original factory off-white finish of the period; a warmer tone we find more inviting than the brighter white of newer Pedestal Tables. The original white laminate top has also been polished and remains in excellent vintage condition.
This iconic design is a true original of its era, presented in the largest available size at 96” and carefully restored to provide at least another lifetime of enjoyment. -
