Description
Pair of Early Eero Saarinen “Tulip” Side Tables, c.1960 – Oiled Walnut Tops & Cast-Iron Bases
A rare early production of Saarinen’s iconic Tulip side table, this matching pair dates to circa 1960 and retains its original cast-iron pedestal bases and oiled walnut tabletops. Designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll Associates, the Tulip collection was conceived to eliminate the “slum of legs” under conventional tables. These early cast-iron–based examples predate the later aluminum-pedestal versions and are identified by the original Knoll Associates Park Avenue showroom label on the underside of each top.
Key Features
• Designer: Eero Saarinen for Knoll Associates
• Date: circa 1960, early cast-iron base production
• Bases: Solid cast iron with factory black enamel finish
• Tops: Oiled walnut, factory-applied matte finish
• Label: Original Knoll Associates Park Avenue label affixed below each table
• Form: Sleek, single-stem pedestal eliminating multiple legs for a sculptural modernist profile
Dimensions (each)
• Height: 21″ (53.3 cm)
• Diameter: 16″ (40.6 cm)
Condition
Very good original vintage condition consistent with age and use. Walnut tops show light surface wear and gentle patina; bases retain the original white enamel with minimal chipping or oxidation. All structural components are sound, and tables stand level and sturdy.
Collector’s Note
These early cast-iron–based Tulip tables are increasingly scarce—most surviving examples were converted to aluminum or replaced entirely. The Park Avenue labels confirm their provenance to Knoll’s flagship New York showroom, making them exceptional finds for collectors of mid-century modern design and Saarinen’s work in particular. -
