Description
A late-19th-century French games table finely veneered in ebony, walnut, and satinwood with intricate geometric marquetry throughout. The rectangular top displays a central inlaid draughts (checkers) board framed by complex parquetry panels and border bands of alternating pattern. The frieze incorporates two drawers fitted with working locks and keys. Each leg is turned and fluted, inlaid vertically with ebony lines and terminating in large brass cup casters. The corners of the apron bear compass-star motifs.
Elaborately inlaid tables like these were popular in the final quarter of the 19th century often produced in Paris or the Franco-Belgian workshops associated with the period’s international exhibitions, where marquetry skill was prominently displayed.
