Fine George III Drafting Table
England, circa 1770-1780
Mahogany, brass and leather
32 ½ H x 47 ¾ W x 24 ¾ D inches
Provenance: Robert L.B. Tobin, New York
This George III period architect’s drafting table has a rectangular, hinged top, which can be raised to multiple heights to display drawings or plans. Below is a drawer with oval brass pulls centered with urns motifs. The drawers contain a leather-lined writing surface, which slides back to reveal four lidded wells and three niches. A small drawer with space for ink wells and a pen tray slides out from the left side of the large drawer. The table’s body is supported by four molded square legs raised on casters. This table was owned by Robert Tobin, patron of the arts in New York, Santa Fe and his native San Antonio, where his extensive collection of scenographic drawings now resides.
