Description
English neoclassical center table in now-extinct Cuban mahogany. Leather-covered shaped top surrounded by original mercury-gilt cast brass decorative edge. Leather top is hand-tooled and gilded. Base features matching mercury-gilt cast brass decoration. The mercury-gilding is all-original and mostly intact with some losses. Exposed brass reveals small amounts of verdigris patina (where copper and zinc mixed unevenly to create the cast brass adornment). The early deep, rich polished finish of this circa 1820-1845 statement piece is recently refreshed by an expert hand.
