Description
English Satinwood Writing Table
Circa 1860
The rectangular top inset with a worn brown leather writing surface is above three frieze drawers retaining their original handles and escutcheons. The satinwood veneers are enriched with rosewood, tulipwood, harewood, and ebony inlay throughout, the whole raised on tapering fluted legs with ormolu collars and brass casters. The drawers lined in mahogany and cedar.
Particularly appealing is the contrast between the warm satinwood veneers, crisp dark inlay, and restrained use of ormolu throughout. The table possesses a light, architectural elegance while maintaining strong decorative presence. The marquetry borders and floral corner inlays are especially fine, displaying a precision and delicacy associated with sophisticated English cabinetmaking of the mid-19th century.
Though inspired by late 18th-century French and English neoclassical furniture, the table avoids excessive ornament, relying instead on proportion, restrained detailing, and exceptional materials. The mellow patina to the satinwood, combined with the worn leather writing surface, gives the table considerable character and authenticity. Notably, the table appears to retain original surfaces throughout, including what is likely the original leather writing surface. -
