Fine Regency Occasional Table, attr. Thomas Parker, c. 1820

$ 12,000
  • Description
    Fine Regency Occasional Table
    Attributed to Thomas Parker
    English, circa 1820

    Elegant and finely proportioned, the table combines richly figured walnut and rosewood veneers with ebony veneering and finely cast ormolu mounts throughout. The rectangular top is framed by an acanthus-cast ormolu edge above a slender columnar support with gilt-mounted fluting, standing on a sculptural quadripartite base with scrolling legs in the Louis XIV manner. Particularly striking are the boldly modeled ormolu lion masks and the contrast between the warm veneers, dark ebony ground, and gilt metalwork.

    The table reflects the strong French influence present in the finest English Regency furniture and relates closely to the work of the important London cabinetmaker Thomas Parker. Best known for his revival of Boulle work during the Regency period, Parker frequently adapted Régence and Louis XIV forms into a distinctly English idiom, combining French exuberance with the cleaner proportions favored during the reign of George IV.

    Several documented tables attributed to Thomas Parker employ closely related bases to the present example, including examples with identical scrolling quadripartite supports, lion-mask mounts, and clustered column shafts. A particularly relevant comparison was published by H. Blairman & Sons illustrating a tripod table attributed to Parker and supplied to George IV, circa 1815. The present table shares the same sophisticated fusion of Regency and Louis XIV design vocabulary characteristic of Parker’s finest work.¹

    Thomas Parker operated from 19 Air Street, Piccadilly between 1808 and 1817, later relocating to Warwick Street, Golden Square, where he remained active into the late 1820s. The Prince Regent, later George IV, favored the firm and commissioned notable furniture for Carlton House, including a pair of caskets-on-stands. Parker’s work remains among the most distinctive expressions of the late Regency fascination with French royal furniture of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

    Chosen for its exceptional color, fine ormolu mounts, strong sculptural base, and highly sophisticated use of contrasting veneers.
