Description
George III Irish Satinwood Pier Table
Circa 1790
Elegant and confident, with beautifully radiating satinwood veneers, superb rosewood and kingwood crossbanding throughout, and a richly figured central panel of burr yew. The demilune top veneered in radial segments and outlined with finely executed banding and inlay, giving the table remarkable visual movement while maintaining a restrained neoclassical elegance.
The bold geometry and sophisticated use of contrasting woods are strongly characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dublin cabinetmaking (compare The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, 2007, p. 167, fig. 228). Particularly appealing is the wonderful color and the balance between the richly figured veneers and the disciplined architectural form.
Graceful yet highly decorative, the table works equally well as a pier table, console, or serving table within both traditional and contemporary interiors. -
