Gillows: A Satinwood and Inlaid Octagonal Center Table, c. 1790-1800
-
Description
An octagonal table with four real and four faux drawers, two of the drawers being deep and two shallow, each drawer with the original turned handles.
The top with beautifully figured and deeply colored satinwood inlaid with two bands of rosewood (possibly kingwood) and finished to the perimeter with gadrooning to the top and bottom edges. The center column supported by an original steel rod presumably designed to provide additional strength to the table when the top was being rotated, with the incurved triangular base decorated with the same gadrooned edging, terminating with foliate carved feet over flattened balls above in-set casters.
The upper portion of the column stamped with the Gillows signature GILLOWS · LANCASTER.
This is a magnificent table produced at the height of the Sheraton period when Satinwood was the most fashionable wood in London salons.
With a recent provenance to Kentshire New York (1980’s) and subsequently Private collectors, at the famous Dakota, New York.
