Description
This guéridon table, designed by Jean Prouvé and produced in France circa the 1950s, exemplifies his approach to furniture as an extension of engineering. The square tabletop is supported by a central structural assembly composed of slender steel elements that converge into a pivoting base, creating a system defined by tension, balance, and material efficiency. The construction is fully legible, with each component contributing directly to the stability and logic of the whole.
Prouvé’s work is distinguished by its integration of industrial processes and architectural thinking, developed through his Ateliers Jean Prouvé. His designs prioritize economy of means, clarity of structure, and the expressive potential of metal, often drawing parallels with aeronautical and mechanical engineering—reflected here in the Aérodrome typology. This table stands as a precise example of mid-century French modernism, where form is inseparable from function and construction. -
