This coffee table was designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard, the Danish designer and sculptor whose work did much to bring Scandinavian modern design to audiences in America, Europe and Japan through his long association with Dansk Designs.
The square top is cut from a densely figured hardwood, the grain running in broad bands across the surface and framed by a raised moulded lip. Four polished steel discs sit flush within the field of the top, marking the points where the legs meet the underside. Below, the frame is formed of splayed steel uprights joined by turned hardwood stretchers, each tapering to a rounded terminal and held by polished metal collars, giving the base the character of a folding campaign frame. The warm tone of the hardwood is set against the cool line of the polished metal.
The table was manufactured by Richard Nissen at Nissens Trævarefabrik. A comparable table by Quistgaard was sold in the Important 20th Century Design sale at Christie's, New York, on 16 June 2011 for $122,500.
