Description
A refined and highly sculptural Brazilian modern coffee table attributed to Joaquim Tenreiro, dating to the 1960s—an especially important period in which Tenreiro’s language matured into a disciplined balance of lightness, precision, and artisanal woodworking. This table closely follows the principles that define his work from the era: reduced geometry, emphasis on proportion, and a structure that feels visually “lifted” despite robust materials.
The base is executed in plywood with rosewood veneer, framed in solid Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), and topped with glass—an elegant material pairing frequently associated with Tenreiro’s pursuit of clarity and visual levity. The glass surface creates transparency and allows the architecture of the base to remain fully visible, while the solid rosewood framing provides definition, warmth, and a sense of finish. Subtle metal elements further reinforce the table’s crisp modernist character, complementing the contrast between the dense jacarandá and the lightness of glass.
What distinguishes this example is the distinctive shaping of the base, where the lines are resolved with the kind of quiet sophistication typical of Tenreiro’s approach: curves and planes are treated as structural decisions rather than decoration, and every transition reads as intentional. The result is a composition that feels both sculptural and restrained—an object designed to be lived with, yet strong enough to hold its own as a centerpiece.
The rosewood has been beautifully refinished, revealing expressive grain and tonal variation with a refined satin surface. The table presents in superb condition, with only minimal age-appropriate wear consistent with its vintage nature.
Provenance adds further depth: the table originates from a private residence in Teresópolis, a mountain city roughly two hours from **Rio de Janeiro—a compelling context for a piece aligned with the period’s sophisticated Brazilian interiors.
A rare and versatile work that integrates seamlessly into both mid-century and contemporary settings, offering the warmth of jacarandá, the elegance of glass, and the architectural intelligence associated with Tenreiro’s most compelling years. -
