Description
Designed in 1962 by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by L’Atelier, the Large Ambassador Desk reflects the designer’s synthesis of European modernist principles with the richness of Brazilian materials. Its architectural composition is defined by clean horizontal lines, balanced proportions, and a restrained structural rhythm. The expansive rosewood surfaces reveal a striking interplay of tonal variations and natural grain, while subtle brass and chrome fittings underscore the precision of its construction.
Zalszupin, a central figure in the development of Brazilian modern design, was deeply influenced by Scandinavian functionalism, yet his work remains distinguished by its sensuous materiality and refined detailing. Born in Poland and trained as an architect before settling in Brazil in the late 1940s, he brought a rigorous European design education into dialogue with Brazil’s extraordinary natural resources. Through L’Atelier, the company he founded in São Paulo in 1959, Zalszupin championed the expressive potential of native hardwoods, particularly jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood), whose density, depth of color, and dramatic figuring became integral to his aesthetic language. In this desk, the wood is not merely a surface but a structural and visual protagonist, articulating volume and rhythm while affirming the cultural and material identity of Brazilian modernism at its height. -
