Description
Designed by Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s, the Chanceler coffee table exemplifies the refined materiality and structural clarity that define the designer’s work. Zalszupin (1922–2020), founder of L’Atelier, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Brazilian modern furniture, known for combining rigorous architectural forms with the richness of Brazilian hardwoods.
The table features a square top in Brazilian rosewood, whose surface reveals deep tonal variation and dramatic grain patterns characteristic of the species. The broad planar top allows the natural figure of the wood to remain the primary visual element, emphasizing the material’s warmth and depth.
Supporting the top is a sculptural base composed of intersecting rosewood elements joined with metal supports, forming a distinctive X-shaped structure. This geometric configuration creates both visual lightness and structural stability, reflecting Zalszupin’s ability to balance engineering precision with sculptural presence.
The rosewood surfaces have been carefully refinished to enhance the clarity of the grain while preserving the original character of the piece. The table remains in excellent condition.
A refined example of mid-century Brazilian modernism, the Chanceler table demonstrates Zalszupin’s mastery of proportion, material, and structure. -
