Description
A refined French Art Deco side table by Jules Leleu (1883–1961), executed in richly figured walnut with elegant gilt bronze mounts. The rectangular top with softly eased edges floats above a recessed, book-matched pedestal body fitted with a single concealed frieze drawer, the whole raised on a stepped, two-tier gilt bronze plinth that lifts the piece visually from the floor — a hallmark of Leleu's mature design vocabulary, where architectural mass is tempered by precise metalwork and warm, hand-selected timbers. The drawer opens on a small spherical gilt bronze pull, the only ornament on an otherwise serene, almost sculptural composition.
The proportions and construction are quintessentially Maison Leleu: French-polished walnut veneers laid in long vertical panels to emphasize the natural figure of the wood, a hand-fitted dovetailed oak drawer, and exquisitely chased and gilded bronze elements applied with the discretion that distinguished Leleu commissions from his more flamboyant contemporaries. The table functions equally well as a bout de canapé, occasional table, or compact bedside, and is in excellent restored condition — French polish refreshed, bronze cleaned and re-gilded where necessary, drawer running smoothly.
Référence — Viviane Jutheau de Witt, Leleu — 50 ans de mobilier et de décoration 1920–1970, Éditions Somogy, Paris. Comparable models in walnut and rosewood with gilt bronze socles are documented within the catalogue raisonné, and Leleu's bouts de canapé of this form appear in period interior photographs of the Maison Leleu showrooms and private commissions of the late 1930s and 1940s.
Jules Leleu was among the defining ensembliers of the French Art Deco movement. Founded in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1910 and established in Paris in 1924, Maison Leleu rose to international prominence through prestigious commissions including the ocean liners Île-de-France and Normandie, the Élysée Palace, French embassies abroad, and the League of Nations in Geneva. Leleu's signature combined classical proportion with the finest ébénisterie — figured walnut, palisander, sycamore, and Macassar ebony — enriched with discreet luxury in the form of lacquer, shagreen, mother-of-pearl, and chased gilt bronze. His pieces are held today in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris), the Mobilier National, and major private collections worldwide. Furniture from the Maison Leleu workshop is increasingly sought after for its rare combination of architectural clarity and warm, tactile materiality — qualities fully evident in the present side table.
