Lacquered Console or Writing Table, Hand-Painted, Tuscany, 18th Century
-
Description
A delightful 18th-century Tuscan table, masterfully hand-lacquered and painted, evoking the pastoral elegance of rural Italy during the Enlightenment. This light and graceful piece would have originally served as a writing or console table, and it exudes charm, intimacy, and a timeworn beauty that only centuries can bestow.
The rectangular top is framed in a soft blue border and adorned with a central foliate scroll in terracotta red, echoed by delicate corner flourishes. The decoration is entirely hand-painted, with foliate motifs in muted blue and dusty rose gracing the drawer front and legs. The single central drawer, with its painted diamond escutcheon, offers subtle utility, while maintaining the piece’s airy aesthetic.
Raised on slender tapered legs with ornamental cuffs and painted embellishments, the table embodies the neoclassical style adapted through a regional, artisanal lens, less austere than its Parisian cousins, more whimsical and folkloric, as seen in Tuscan provincial furniture.
Though decorative, this table remains functional, and would be a poetic addition to a hallway, bedroom, or reading nook. It’s the kind of piece that seems to whisper stories, of letters written, dried lavender, ink pots, and candlelight.
This is an antique and having been around for a long time, it will show signs of wear. Antique pieces have very much sought-after character and associated flaws. Please review photos for condition & contact us with questions! -
