Description
Marcel Breuer Custom Dining Table from the Offices of Marcel Breuer, New York 1965
A striking example of Modernist design, this custom dining table was created for the offices of Marcel Breuer. Constructed entirely from carnelian granite, the piece features a solid top supported by two interlocking slab bases—an ingenious structural and sculptural solution that reflects Breuer’s mastery of material and form.
Dimensions:
29¼ H × 52 W × 52 D in. (74 × 132 × 132 cm)
Materials:
Carnelian granite
Condition:
Micro chips throughout, consistent with age and use.
Provenance:
Collection of Herbert and Eleanor Beckhard
For over four decades, architect Herbert Beckhard worked closely with Marcel Breuer, eventually becoming a partner at Marcel Breuer and Associates. Together, they designed over 30 residences and numerous significant public buildings, helping to define American Modernism in the 20th century. Known for their rigorous approach to material and tailored client relationships, Breuer and Beckhard emphasized the use of stone—particularly granite—as both structural and aesthetic medium. This table, from Beckhard’s personal collection, embodies that ethos with purity of form and material integrity. -
