Description
NEOCLASSICAL STYLE TWO-TIER CHROMED GUERIDON WITH MIRRORED GLASS
Mid-20th Century
29 7/8" H x 26 7/8" diameter
A round two-tier side table in chromed nickel, the upper and lower shelves inset with mirrored glass. The frame features scrolling upper supports, a smaller circular lower tier, and tripod legs joined by an X-form stretcher. Each leg terminates in a paw foot with casters. The design draws on Neoclassical motifs while employing mid-century materials and finishes.
Curator's Note:
This form, characterized by a circular top, the secondary shelf and a tripod base terminating in paw feet, has precedents reaching well into the 19th century, particularly in French and English Neoclassical and Regency interiors. The present example reinterprets the design in chromed nickel with mirrored glass surfaces, a material palette representative of the mid-20th century aesthetic with a sense of transparency and sleekness that allow the 19th century form be easily introduced into modernist interiors. Such adaptations reflect a broader trend in postwar decorative arts where designers revived established silhouettes but improved upon them with reflective surfaces and streamlined finishes that made them relevant for contemporary interiors and tastes.
Condition: Mirrored glass is scratched throughout (we can have the glass very inexpensively replaced upon request, contact for a quote). Minor reshaped bend to the edge of the upper rim. Some loss to chroming around the rim in a few spots, other rubbing wear or losses to chrome. Trace verdigris and polish residue in crevices. A very fresh and striking presentation, ready to place.
