Napoleon III Marquetry Side Table, France, circa 1870
-
Description
This refined Napoleon III side table, dating to around 1870, embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of 19th-century France. The shaped top is beautifully inlaid with marquetry, depicting a central vase of flowers surrounded by scrolling foliage, all framed with fine brass stringing. The hinged surface opens to reveal a beautiful mirrored compartment fitted with small interior storage, a feature that enhances both charm and practicality. A discreet drawer is set into the apron, offering further functionality. The piece rests on four fluted legs joined by an X-form stretcher, centered with a bronze bobèche finial, and supported on original brass casters for ease of movement. Compact yet highly decorative, this table serves equally well as a writing, work, or side table.
